Here are a few places we recommend for the best day trips in the far north of Northland New Zealand…
1. Cape Reinga Trip – head to the top for the day
Whether you chose to self-drive and have flexibility, or take the bus tour and get a commentary, the Cape Reinga Trip is a must. Experience the Cape, relax and lunch at Tapotupotu Beach, then have a thrill sand-surfing or just admire the awesomeness of the Giant Te Paki Sand Dunes. On your return journey feast on the largest icecreams in NZ from Te Kao Store, cool down at Rarawa Beach before heading back to camp!!
2. Have a day at the beach
Visit our most popular beach – Rarawa. Walk on the crystal white silica sands shell hunting, or enjoy the clear blue waters. A great surf beach, or if you enter from the southern end the calm waters of Rarawa Creek offer sheltered quiet swimming, ideal for young families.
If you prefer a bit of snorkelling, or the golden sands, try Henderson Bay. Kayaks can be hired from the road as you drive down.
3. Historial Drive
Combine a visit to Gumdiggers Park (20 mins from the holiday park) and Ancient Kauri Kingdom for a morning or afternoon drive. If you wish to venture further, Matthews Vintage Cars in Taipa is another interesting visit.
4. A day fishing
Try your luck at Pukenui Wharf. If the kingfish are running it is specatular and loads of action. Otherwise rock Fishing at Henderson Bay following by a swim for the family, or take a fishing charter.
5. Great Exhibition Bay
Is truely our most favourite spot. It is like Fiji in our own back yard. BUT you have to be taken there. It is across private property, but we guarantee you will love it. Take lunch and go for the day – you must organise this in advance of your arrival, and the office can assist with this.
